Karela Masala Recipe 2 servings


People are not much fond of Karela because of its bitterness but after trying this delicious Karela Masala dish, they might change their choice. The easy-to-make side dish is made with bitter gourd (karela), green chili, onion, tomato, garlic paste, ginger paste, and a melange of spices which balances the bitterness of karela. Serve hot with chappatis or parathas in lunch, dinner or brunch. This can be a perfect recipe to serve in buffets.

Ingredients

  • 2 bitter gourd
  • 1 and 1/4 tablespoon refined oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 and 1/4 tomato
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mango powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 and 1/2 green chilli
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 3/4 onion
  • salt As required
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

How to make Karela Masala

Step 1
To start with chop onions , green chilies, tomatoes, bitter gourds and wash them properly. Take a saucepan and keep it on medium flame.

Step 2
Add oil to the pan and heat it. Now add cumin seeds to the pan and stir it for 2 minutes. Stir in onions and green chilies to the pan. Fry the onions and green chilies till they turn golden brown.

Step 3
Then add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt to the pan and saute the mixture. Stir in tomatoes, ginger-garlic paste and dried mango powder to this mixture and fry for around 5-6 minutes.

Step 4
Add salt and sliced bitter-gourd to the pan and cover the pan with a lid. Cook the dish for 10 minutes. Serve hot by sprinkling garam masala on the top.
